What We Do

Vision Services

eep.png

Step 1: Mass vision screening to identify people needing vision aid.

  • We host screening days at schools and other community venues.

  • Our volunteers are trained to perform vision screenings by Prevent Blindness NC.

  • A partnership with Book Harvest allows us to distribute free books at events!

Step 2: For those needing follow-up, free eye exams are administered by an optometrist working out of Durham Tech's Project SIGHT community Health Lab van.

Step 3: A new pair of glasses is provided!

So far, we have conducted 4,578 vision screenings, helping over 1, 204 kids get the glasses they need.

Many students need to get a physical exam done by a physician in order to participate on school sports teams. Time, financial, and personal constraints can make this hard.

To overcome this barrier, Dr. Cathi, a family physician and our founder, performs sports physicals at local schools. The exams include a brief mental health questionnaire, physical screening, hearing and heart check-up, and an opportunity for students to share their concerns.

We have performed 387 sports physicals and counting.

Hearing Screens

Often as part of sports physical exams, we conduct hearing screens for schoolchildren. When concerns are identified, we connect the students with appropriate help.

246 hearing screenings have been performed to date.

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use disorders in youth.

Several of our volunteers are certified to teach MHFA courses to those in the community. 12 volunteers (and counting) are certified in MHFA.
