What We Believe

Vision for VMC

All children and youth in Durham have unlimited access to high quality, compassionate, preventative health care regardless of their ability to pay. Medical and non-medical volunteers serve together to break down barriers to build a healthier Durham.

All children and their families in Durham have a strong foundation in the six pillars of health (lifestyle medicine - a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections) and flourish.

Values

Access: We believe that everyone deserves access to high quality, compassionate, evidence based preventative health care. We believe in breaking down barriers by taking services where they are needed most.

Health Equity: We know systemic inequities lead to health disparities. We are fully committed to bridging the gap by meeting people where they are. We focus on providing services for those who need it most, who otherwise may not have the opportunities they deserve – regardless of race, gender identy, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.

Service:  We cannot do our work without committed, caring medical and non medical volunteers. We strive to be a space where our volunteers can connect with the Durham community and each other in a meaningful and purpose driven way.

Commitment to Community: We believe in Durham. We collaborate with other established nonprofits and organizations focused on children and youth in Durham to further our mission.  Together we can build a healthier, stronger Durham.

Quality: Durham’s most vulnerable children and youth deserve high quality, evidence-based preventative health services. We pledge to be trustworthy, transparent, and serve with integrity.
